Dear Friend,

When we are trying to make a diet or lifestyle change, we often want those around us to make changes as well. We each have our own path, however, and sometimes we need to walk at our own pace or take a different route to get to the same destination.
There are so many ways to improve your quality of life--physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Even if a particular modality is not of immediate use to you, it is our hope that someone in your circle will benefit from your exposure to this information.

NUTRITION MATTERS (YOUR MOTHER WAS RIGHT!)
|
|
A Message from the Editor, Linda Eve Diamond
Welcome to the May edition of News from the Path. This month's issue is dedicated to nutrition in honor of mothers, who are, in most cases, our first nutritional providers and advisors.
Our mothers did their best, taught with love, and--whether they liked it or not--modeled eating habits and choices. Mothers are known for telling us to eat our vegetables, to have a healthy breakfast, and to not fill up on junk food. As much as our mothers instilled in us those basic nutritional values (and the understanding that we couldn't survive on only candy bars and cookies), there is infinitely more to know about nutrition than most of us learned growing up. And, of course, even if our mothers provided the foundation for an ideal diet, we may not have always been listening.
Nothing is more basic to health and wellness than what we put into our bodies. Nutrition is a cornerstone of treatment for any illness or condition. The foundation of a healthy body, mind, and spirit is built on good dietary choices, and discovering the proper diet for your unique body and lifestyle is a complex process. It's especially difficult with all the changing and conflicting information we see every day. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to seek the guidance of professionals we trust.

SPOTLIGHT ON NUTRITION
|
|
What's in a name?
While all health care practitioners receive training in diet and nutrition, there are some who specialize in providing expert nutritional guidance. These professionals may have various titles, including:
Nutritional Counselor Holistic Health Counselor
Certified or Clinical Nutritionist
Registered Dietician
Naturopath
Diet Lifestyle Consultant Nutritional Specialist Health & Lifestyle Coach Nutrition Coach
When interviewing Nutritional Counselors, be sure to ask about where and how they were trained. Know that the quality of a nutritionist does not necessarily depend on the length of their formal education or the kind of degree they hold. A nutritionist should be experienced, eager to help people, and capable of developing a plan for your particular needs. Above all, find someone whose advice and guidance you trust. Go with your gut--usually a good idea, but especially important when dealing with nutrition!
Who can benefit from nutritional counseling?
Nutritional counseling can help anyone who wants to:
Develop dietary habits that support health Increase energy Reach and maintain a healthy weight Address specific health concerns Understand the connection between food and mood Learn how to order healthy meals in restaurants Learn to make healthy choices in the store Prepare tasty, nutritious meals at home
What do nutritional counselors do?
Some nutritional counselors work strictly through consultations and detailed recommendations, but many offer additional services to help you integrate that information. Those services may include:
Regularly scheduled sessions Phone or e-mail support between sessions A guided tour of a local health food store Analysis of a food diary Recipes and menu planning Private and/or group cooking classes
A lending library of books and CDs Personal chef services Cleaning out your kitchen and pantry, then re-stocking with healthful foods and helpful items for food preparation that will inspire your culinary creativity

| KALYANA MITRA COLUMN |
|
by Kathy Miller, Co-Founder of Wellness Possibilities
Today I received a note from a friend who wanted to let me know she is now celebrating one full year without eating any sugar, wheat or flour. She started this program to gain control over physical symptoms, which happened fairly quickly. Since then she has experienced many additional benefits, including a feeling of peace, enhanced mental clarity, greater emotional stability, and increased creativity.
It has been an honor to witness my friend's journey and I am thrilled that she is achieving such great results. What I haven't told her yet (hello, Kalyana Mitra) is that each time she shares what she's feeling or noticing--the tough moments as well as the celebrations--I feel inspired to take the next step on my own path to wellness.
Thank you for sharing the journey!
